Plants That Gophers MAY Not Eat

Drawing of gopher eating garden carrots underground

This is a list of plants that gophers MAY not eat. It was compiled from various sources online (see sources at end) along with a few of my own observations and comments in parentheses. Please feel invited to share in the comments any experiences you’ve had that confirm or are contrary to this list. Which plants have gophers eaten or stayed away from in your garden? Your experiences may be helpful to other gardeners!

Bees love vitex agnus-castus, and gophers don't seem to. (But I plant mine in gopher baskets anyway. Why risk it?)

Happily, gophers don’t seem to like lavender!

  1. Some areas of my property are indisputably gopher country. Over the last eight years of battling them, I plant most items in gopher baskets. Last year was especially bad and I found they even ate iris tubers which are as toxic as daffodils. I’m sure they probably had an upset tummy but if they are hungry enough they will eat anything.

    1. Thanks for this helpful experience from your garden Mary! Same here, I plant almost everything in a gopher basket. I just lost a mature cordyline where the basket rotted out. See my Mar 15, 2025 post for a photo if interested. I’m grateful you shared about iris. I was wondering about them and gophers. That syncs with my experience…iris are not preferred but they will munch them sometimes.

  2. I had a catnip plant under a milk crate to keep cats from rolling on it. One day it disappeared without the milk crate being disturbed. I picture a drunk gopher.

    1. Aw jeez! Another one! I will make a note about that. Most of our catnip plants do well without gopher baskets, but I’m glad to hear this important feedback from your garden. Thanks Barbara! Good luck with the gophers! -lisa
